Giardino Incompiuto

The phenomenon of unfinished construction in Southern Italy has come to be known as a new architectural style: Incompiotu Siciliano. Caused by the regions fragile economy, historic governmental corruption and mafia infiltration, the resultant sites litter the Sicilian landscape, serving as a constant reminder of past failings.

Located on the northern outskirts of Palermo, the project’s focus is a mafia funded real estate development known as Pizzo Sella - “the hill of shame”. Giardino Incompiuto proposes a network of community gardens which occupy several of the incomplete structures, while transforming the remaining unfinished villas to harvest water.

Giardino Incompiuto was exhibited in Manifesta 12, Palermo, and the RA Summer Show in 2019.
