The Poplar Education Service

The project promotes the foundation of a National Education Service to provide indiscriminate access to free, life-long learning. The NES recognises education as a benefit to all of society, rather than just the individual, and so treats learning as a citizen right. Under the NES, an individual’s educational trajectory will be nurtured regardless of their background and will see every adult and child benefit from studying and playing alongside one another.

The design project consists of an urban strategy involving interventions at various scales, to serve as a pilot scheme, in Poplar, East London. Several new typologies augment the neighbourhood's existing educational infrastructure, encouraging education to spread into the public realm. The masterplan’s overall architectural character draws reference from poplar’s unique post-war urbanism to foster a new civic identity for community education.
